    Leaving the Spaces Team

Starting next week I will no longer be involved as a developer for the Windows Live Spaces product.  I will start to work instead on the next iteration of Windows Live Groups.

This is a bittersweet time for me.  Working on Spaces was my first job out of college, so it will always be somewhat special for that reason alone.  I’ve enjoyed learning to use Spaces myself and seeing how it can help me stay in touch with family and friends.

Recently I’ve also enjoyed interacting with active members of the Spaces community.  I’ve gotten to know many active Spaces users through our team blog, the Spacecraft.  I’ve placed real effort into making sure that our customers are taken care of and get any assistance that they need while using Spaces.  I’m sad to see those days end.  I will probably still read comments on the Spacecraft, but I will no longer take an active role in ensuring that customers received answers to help requests.  It’s sad for me because I really enjoyed the help that I’ve been able to give over these past months.

At the same time this change, like all changes, is exciting.  Windows Live Groups is a new product in the latest release of Windows Live, and I’m really excited about it.  I’ve always believed that the Internet can make our lives more productive and fun.  Windows Live Groups is no exception – it provides groups of friends and family that want an easy way to stay in touch and coordinate combined activities.

I don’t plan to leave this blog entirely – I will probably still post interesting things from time to time as I find ways to use Windows Live Groups to better stay in touch with the people I care about.

Hi X, I'm looking forward to the same things.

I have just formed a group and found its almost impossible to let folks know about it. You can only invite by e-mail, which leaves many on my Network out as they have e-mails switched off, then there is no RSS feeds at all so that I can keep up with members replies, and as stated, it didn't appear at all in What's New with your Network that I had even started a group, or when anyone posts to the group. If you form a group, you need to let everyone know of its existance, then you need a simple way that they can join if they wish (I would prefer the method used when someone wants to join your Network, a message sent, then you just choose yay or nay) a method to quickly delete anyone who has joined but is posting rubbish or rude comments (or spam) ablility to see comments and posts 'on the fly' if possible, (sort of like a Live chat page) where users can just drop in and out of the conversation, that is what I would love to see.

    Hi Russell,
I'm very happy you understand how difficult it is to find out what is new in Groups. I'm looking forward to email notifications of all comments in the future, not just being shown in the Home page. The people in the group are from all over the world, and we post all all different times of the day. I want to be able to answer somebody's question (if I know the answer) no matter what time of day they originally posted it.
    Thanks for listening, Russell.

Oh, and Greg, I'm in the same boat as you - I would LOVE to see what is happening in Groups on Windows Live Home. I have to go to http://groups.live.com/ everyday to see what is happening in my groups - it would be nice to get all of that from Home. Plus, Home has an RSS feed that I can put in a feed reader - even more convenient.

Hi Greg, what types of groups would you like to find to join? The groups that you've mentioned (family, work, HOA) are _very_ person-specific and I couldn't imagine them being of general interest to Windows Live customers.

Congrats on the move, Russell. I'm very excited about the possibilities of WL Groups, and I look forward to your future developments for the service.

I've already created several groups for my family (the group e-mail feature makes it easy for friends and relatives to send messages to the entire family, and the group calendar is nice), my HOA, and my work colleagues. I just wish it was easier to find groups to join, and easier to see what's happening on the group via my WL Home page.

    Russell,

I am a co-owner of Hack Spaces Forum, so I can go in and tinker with the settings. There is a page called "Email" under "Group Options". I'll paste the options that I see there. I don't know how it will show up:

    Group e-mail: On
    Off
Banned from group e-mail: These members can't send group e-mail messages because they were reported for sending junk e-mail messages.
    No members
Not receiving group e-mail: The e-mail accounts for these members return group e-mail messages as undeliverable.
    No members

Anyway, since MSN had email notifications of all posts, I assumed that what this was talking about.

    Thanks,

    X

X, what do you mean by "group options are set to send notifications"? Where do you see this setting?
    Jan. 2
Personally I'd prefer to see infomation about activity on my groups at home.live.com. e.g. "Discussion 'thread name' on group 'group name' has had 2 replies.

Email notification is imprtant as well of course.

Russell, you and I are on the same page, then. I check Hack Spaces several times a day to see if somebody has a question I can answer. It would save a lot of time to just read incoming email and then respond to ones I know the answer to.

Also, if somebody posts a question, they have to keep checking back to see if there is an answer. What's strange is that the group's options are set to send notiications, but there's never been any. I've sent them out myself.

I'm happy that you are in Groups develpment, now. I feel you understand, and that's great.

Hi X, thanks for the well-wishes. I've been keeping up with the activity on Hack Live Spaces. It's been a nice introduction for me to get used to using Groups. I'm with you - I'd love to be able to subscribe to e-mail notifications of Group discussion activity. Right now I have to visit http://groups.live.com/ every so often in order to stay in touch with what's happening in my groups. I'd love to cut that step out and get all of the notification that I need right in my e-mail inbox.

Gee. that sounded more like a gripe than a congratulations. Seriously, I hope you enjoy your new position. Thanks for all the help.

    Russell,

Best wishes to you in your new job. A bunch of us over at Hack Live Spaces have a lot of experience with the new iteration of Live Groups, so feel free to surf the board and read our past comments. My pet request: Email notification of new discussions and comments in the group.
I was very active in MSN Groups, too. So I know what capabilities groups used to have that we no longer have.
